KIRKELY

Balsfjord

Stone Age rock carvings, painted.

I have visited the Kirkely rock carvings twice. In the year 2000, the motifs were painted but they were partly hidden under forest litter. In 2026, a new viewing platform had been built at the site and the rock had been cleaned with alcohol, but the paint used to make the motifs visible had not been renewed.

The Kirkely rock carvings are located in the Tennes rock art area together with Bukkhammeren and Gråbergan carvings. Around 40 motifs have been found on the Kirkely panel (c. 2700 BC). The selection is a mix of land and sea creatures: mainly elk and porpoises.

Kirkelyn (n. 2700 eKr.) kalliosta on löydetty noin 40 kuviota. Valikoima on sekoitus maan ja meren eläviä: lähinnä hirviä ja pyöriäisiä.
